Some new platform I’ve never heard of, but apparently is free with ads, yet I watch it from Amazon Prime, just dropped the perfected mindless summer series reuniting two actors who feed off each other with the most perfect comedic results. The always marvelous and DL beloved Martha Plimpton is a wannabe crime moll, in the cut of Ellen Barkin in Animal Kingdom who assembles a team of criminals who have been released from prison early because of Covid-19. Hot Daddy Garret Dillahunt, who played her husband on Raising Hope, is her son’s reluctant former cell mate drawn into the group doing Crime during Covid and their energy together zings as Plimpton chews up the scenery unlike ever before. On top of it she has no vanity at all and she’s a hot mess as well.

PR poodle has been spotted!
But I love Martha so you are forgiven. I might check this out.

I've seen the first episode; it's hilarious and I never watched Raising Hope.

Hope it's good. I love FreeVee. Otherwise, Amazon sucks.

Love Martha so I'll be watching.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 19, 2022 6:24 AM |
R4 OMG, that’s who she’s channeling! Yes, but definitely putting her own spin on it. I can’t believe the contorted faces she makes, especially while smoking, there’s a scene where she smoking in her mask and you still know her face is doing that underneath. Amy Sedaris should definitely guest star as her sister at some point.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 19, 2022 6:25 AM |
Amy Sedaris played her cousin on Raising Hope so it could happen.

I don't do commercials, so hard pass.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 19, 2022 6:30 AM |
Here’s a pic of hot daddy Dillahunt to remind you of his manly, quirky beauty. It looks like he’s aged like fine wine too! I’m expecting there will be some sexual harassment by Plimpton’s sex starved mom character. It looks like he’s an EP on the show so it’s good to know that obviously they had a good working relationship on Raising Hope that he put them together for this.

She really has matured fabulously as an actress. I remember her as a teenaged actress, I wouldn't have guessed she had this kind of talent or would have career longevity.

Thanks, R11. I went onto my Amazon acct and I don't see that option for Sprung, only watching with FreeVee.

She played the crazy mom in Flack. I really liked that show and they said they were doing a third season but it was never released.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 19, 2022 6:58 AM |
Just watched the first half of the first episode. Don't think I'll be going back. The jokes so far are mildly amusing, at best, but not really funny, and the characters are not really people I'd want to spend time with.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 19, 2022 7:13 AM |
The first two episodes were funny at times, but even though Garret turns out to be a do-gooder it’s hard to root for any of any of these characters. I’d rather watch Garret and Martha in a reboot of Raising Hope instead.
Martha steals every scene she’s in, and the bits where she references Donald Trump are the funniest. The actress playing the female ex-con is just okay. They should have cast someone else to play Martha’s dim witted son, as the actor playing him brings nothing to the show.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 20, 2022 10:50 AM |
I really had fun watching this.
I've enjoyed Garcia's other shows though I do tend to lose interest after a couple of seasons.
But nowadays a couple of seasons is a very good run.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | August 20, 2022 12:44 PM |
I’ll give it a shot. The other day I was browsing Netflix “trending” and noticed that all of the programs had been the subject of a DL thread. Obviously someone is promoting them.
It’s okay, though, because I’ve been introduced to my favorite series here.
But just know that we see you, PR flunkies.

Freevee is just the old IMDB.TV renamed.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 20, 2022 1:06 PM |
Lol, like my run on sentences and overly fawning Plimpton worship is some counter marketing scheme I’m doing backed by a big P.R. company, I wish. If anyone know how I can do this and make money let me know. But the way I must have watched the Friday episode somehow early on Thursday because I didn’t get a new one yesterday??? When things drop on streaming confuses me very much.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 20, 2022 1:06 PM |
FreeVee is not a “new platform,” OP, just a rebrand of the IMDbTV channel that Amazon launched three years ago. Most decent content on prime these days is only available through FreeVee, which has signed licensing agreements with Lionsgate and universal. I hate being forced to watch the ads.

by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 20, 2022 1:21 PM |
Martha seems to be doing better than ever career-wise and good for her, I’ve always thought she was a great actress but she was sidelined for a while in the 90s in favour of the more typical ingenue types like Winona Ryder and Jennifer Connelly. I always thought she’d age into a terrific character actress and that’s what she’s becoming.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 20, 2022 1:38 PM |
Martha was great in The Good Wife and last year’s Generation.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 20, 2022 1:52 PM |
The two characters who are not played by Plimpton and Dillahunt are useless. The woman is a complete cipher, both character and actress-wise. She brings nothing to the table. And the guy playing Plimpton's son was clearly told- watch The Good Place and do an imitation of the dumb chino-latino character on there and don't waver from it for a second.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 20, 2022 3:42 PM |
The flashback sequence where Dillahunt’s character recalls all of the criminal techniques he picked up from his fellow inmates got really old by episode 2.

THanks OP. I would never have known about it. The first two eps were amusing. I mean its not great TV but I welcome amusing with some satire. The satire and social commentary is clear and hits squarely the targets. The Trump bleach speech on the TV was funny!!!

I love Martha and I think Garrett is sexy in the pic posted above but I’ve never found Greg Garcia shows funny, so I’m gonna pass on this. I’ve never particularly found Garrett Dillihunt all that knee slapping either. I always associate him with the Last House on the Left. The same goes for his female co-star in that movie who also shows in comedy projects all the time.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | August 23, 2022 12:36 PM |
I thought Garret was hilarious on Raising Hope, but on this one he is more or less the straight man to the more wackier characters. Unfortunately, of those characters Martha is really the only interesting and entertaining one so far.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 23, 2022 12:44 PM |
I enjoyed episodes 3 and 4 much more than the first two episodes. Still wish they had cast someone more appealing to play Martha’s son.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | August 30, 2022 11:04 PM |
The actor playing the son is cute. The character is pathetic but perhaps its a setup for a redemption arc.

I love this show! I'll watch anything Garret Dillahunt is in - he's so good. Such a talented comedic actor, and a total hunk.
He did an extended bit trying to look into a garbage can while wearing a dog cone collar that had me rolling on the floor. Just brilliant.

R44 I agree. The Stockard Channing episode was one of the best on The Guest Book. Garcia had a good run with My Name is Earl which had a great ensemble cast and was very underrated.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | September 8, 2022 8:06 AM |
All episodes are out now, in the end it’s not a bad little first season for a series, but I think they dumped the rest of the episodes because they weren’t getting the following they hoped for or watching went down because people forgot about it by a week later. It’s much more of a binge in one weekend than follow weekly show.
The creator does a phenomenal job of introducing characters and building them into the narrative and having them actual all do something and become important to the story. It’s very intricately thought out and acts as a well oiled machine with lots of call backs. There was the introduction of a Gay male couple in the final third who were nicely bitchy, but not over the top. Everybody in the cast gets to shine, and they all act stupid at sone point, but nothing completely mean spirited or overly vulgar. The ensemble really grew in strength into their parts by the end, and you get the sense they started to really have fun together as a cast.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | September 19, 2022 12:18 AM |
Did it end with 9 episodes? That's all I have access to. I enjoyed it. A great little caper. Oh and I'm going to find my favorite standalone episode of The Guest Book. Heavy on the gay content.

I’m pro-choice but Martha has had too many abortions for me to be comfortable watching her onscreen. After 5, the madness becomes the method, I’m afraid.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | September 19, 2022 12:44 AM |
Funniest thing about this show is Martha Plimptons ode to ‘Strangers with Candy’ and the 70s gem of a car … the PACER! Otherwise it’s bad , predictable and ‘jokes’ are stale.

I did not recognize Susan Ruttan of LA Law playing Garret’s mom until that final episode. And it wasn’t until the credits that I noticed it was Love Boat’s Fred Grandy playing the old husband of Kate Walsh’s character.
This felt like a series finale, which wouldn’t be a bad thing. If so, I hope Garret and Martha team up for something else one day!

Martha is going to have so many roles suddenly available to her the older she gets. It's like she was born to play a crotchety, alarmingly plain-speaking old lady. She's the Marjorie Main of the 21st century, which is why I love her.

by Anonymous | reply 92 | September 24, 2022 1:58 AM |
It’s a new network that needs to have some solid hits and build a following, so I think if the numbers are well enough there is a strong chance it could get a season two. Remember when FOX first launched in the early years, they renewed shows just to have programming going on. I just don’t know what word of mouth exists for this show in the larger world outside this thread. Also, there’s a chance another streaming platform might see it and think it’s a good starter series and pick it up and blow it up like HBO Max did with The Other Two and Search Party. Two of my favorites of the last few years.
