Some new platform I’ve never heard of, but apparently is free with ads, yet I watch it from Amazon Prime, just dropped the perfected mindless summer series reuniting two actors who feed off each other with the most perfect comedic results. The always marvelous and DL beloved Martha Plimpton is a wannabe crime moll, in the cut of Ellen Barkin in Animal Kingdom who assembles a team of criminals who have been released from prison early because of Covid-19. Hot Daddy Garret Dillahunt, who played her husband on Raising Hope, is her son’s reluctant former cell mate drawn into the group doing Crime during Covid and their energy together zings as Plimpton chews up the scenery unlike ever before. On top of it she has no vanity at all and she’s a hot mess as well.

She's just so damned plain looking. Poor girl deserves a better career than this.

by Anonymousreply 1August 19, 2022 6:12 AM

PR poodle has been spotted!

But I love Martha so you are forgiven. I might check this out.

by Anonymousreply 2August 19, 2022 6:12 AM

I've seen the first episode; it's hilarious and I never watched Raising Hope.

by Anonymousreply 3August 19, 2022 6:13 AM

Hope it's good. I love FreeVee. Otherwise, Amazon sucks.

by Anonymousreply 5August 19, 2022 6:17 AM

Love Martha so I'll be watching.

by Anonymousreply 6August 19, 2022 6:24 AM

R4 OMG, that’s who she’s channeling! Yes, but definitely putting her own spin on it. I can’t believe the contorted faces she makes, especially while smoking, there’s a scene where she smoking in her mask and you still know her face is doing that underneath. Amy Sedaris should definitely guest star as her sister at some point.

by Anonymousreply 7August 19, 2022 6:25 AM

Amy Sedaris played her cousin on Raising Hope so it could happen.

by Anonymousreply 8August 19, 2022 6:28 AM

I don't do commercials, so hard pass.

by Anonymousreply 9August 19, 2022 6:30 AM

Here’s a pic of hot daddy Dillahunt to remind you of his manly, quirky beauty. It looks like he’s aged like fine wine too! I’m expecting there will be some sexual harassment by Plimpton’s sex starved mom character. It looks like he’s an EP on the show so it’s good to know that obviously they had a good working relationship on Raising Hope that he put them together for this.

[quote] The always marvelous and DL beloved Martha Plimpton is a wannabe crime moll...

She really has matured fabulously as an actress. I remember her as a teenaged actress, I wouldn't have guessed she had this kind of talent or would have career longevity.

by Anonymousreply 12August 19, 2022 6:38 AM

Thanks, R11. I went onto my Amazon acct and I don't see that option for Sprung, only watching with FreeVee.

by Anonymousreply 13August 19, 2022 6:51 AM

She played the crazy mom in Flack. I really liked that show and they said they were doing a third season but it was never released.

by Anonymousreply 14August 19, 2022 6:58 AM

Just watched the first half of the first episode. Don't think I'll be going back. The jokes so far are mildly amusing, at best, but not really funny, and the characters are not really people I'd want to spend time with.

by Anonymousreply 15August 19, 2022 7:13 AM

The first two episodes were funny at times, but even though Garret turns out to be a do-gooder it’s hard to root for any of any of these characters. I’d rather watch Garret and Martha in a reboot of Raising Hope instead.

Martha steals every scene she’s in, and the bits where she references Donald Trump are the funniest. The actress playing the female ex-con is just okay. They should have cast someone else to play Martha’s dim witted son, as the actor playing him brings nothing to the show.

by Anonymousreply 16August 20, 2022 10:50 AM

I really had fun watching this.

I've enjoyed Garcia's other shows though I do tend to lose interest after a couple of seasons.

But nowadays a couple of seasons is a very good run.

by Anonymousreply 17August 20, 2022 12:44 PM

I’ll give it a shot. The other day I was browsing Netflix “trending” and noticed that all of the programs had been the subject of a DL thread. Obviously someone is promoting them.

It’s okay, though, because I’ve been introduced to my favorite series here.

But just know that we see you, PR flunkies.

by Anonymousreply 18August 20, 2022 1:01 PM

Freevee is just the old IMDB.TV renamed.

by Anonymousreply 19August 20, 2022 1:06 PM

Lol, like my run on sentences and overly fawning Plimpton worship is some counter marketing scheme I’m doing backed by a big P.R. company, I wish. If anyone know how I can do this and make money let me know. But the way I must have watched the Friday episode somehow early on Thursday because I didn’t get a new one yesterday??? When things drop on streaming confuses me very much.

by Anonymousreply 20August 20, 2022 1:06 PM

FreeVee is not a “new platform,” OP, just a rebrand of the IMDbTV channel that Amazon launched three years ago. Most decent content on prime these days is only available through FreeVee, which has signed licensing agreements with Lionsgate and universal. I hate being forced to watch the ads.

by Anonymousreply 21August 20, 2022 1:07 PM

“At his Most Concentrated”?

That’s amusing!

by Anonymousreply 22August 20, 2022 1:08 PM

I never even watched or knew of IMDBTV before, let alone it’s been rebranded.

by Anonymousreply 24August 20, 2022 1:21 PM

Martha seems to be doing better than ever career-wise and good for her, I’ve always thought she was a great actress but she was sidelined for a while in the 90s in favour of the more typical ingenue types like Winona Ryder and Jennifer Connelly. I always thought she’d age into a terrific character actress and that’s what she’s becoming.

by Anonymousreply 25August 20, 2022 1:38 PM

Martha was great in The Good Wife and last year’s Generation.

by Anonymousreply 26August 20, 2022 1:52 PM

The two characters who are not played by Plimpton and Dillahunt are useless. The woman is a complete cipher, both character and actress-wise. She brings nothing to the table. And the guy playing Plimpton's son was clearly told- watch The Good Place and do an imitation of the dumb chino-latino character on there and don't waver from it for a second.

by Anonymousreply 27August 20, 2022 3:42 PM

The flashback sequence where Dillahunt’s character recalls all of the criminal techniques he picked up from his fellow inmates got really old by episode 2.

by Anonymousreply 28August 20, 2022 3:52 PM

First episode is so good, because of Martha. No binge watching this one. Savoring it.

by Anonymousreply 29August 22, 2022 1:36 AM

I loved Martha in "Pecker" and was disappointed John Waters didn't add her to his stable of recurring actors.

"But Mr. Nellbox, trade is my LIFE!"

by Anonymousreply 30August 22, 2022 2:20 AM

Garcia, Plimpton and Dillahunt preview the show.

by Anonymousreply 31August 22, 2022 4:01 AM

THanks OP. I would never have known about it. The first two eps were amusing. I mean its not great TV but I welcome amusing with some satire. The satire and social commentary is clear and hits squarely the targets. The Trump bleach speech on the TV was funny!!!

by Anonymousreply 32August 23, 2022 8:55 AM

I love Martha and I think Garrett is sexy in the pic posted above but I’ve never found Greg Garcia shows funny, so I’m gonna pass on this. I’ve never particularly found Garrett Dillihunt all that knee slapping either. I always associate him with the Last House on the Left. The same goes for his female co-star in that movie who also shows in comedy projects all the time.

by Anonymousreply 34August 23, 2022 12:36 PM

I thought Garret was hilarious on Raising Hope, but on this one he is more or less the straight man to the more wackier characters. Unfortunately, of those characters Martha is really the only interesting and entertaining one so far.

by Anonymousreply 35August 23, 2022 12:44 PM

I enjoyed episodes 3 and 4 much more than the first two episodes. Still wish they had cast someone more appealing to play Martha’s son.

by Anonymousreply 36August 30, 2022 11:04 PM

The actor playing the son is cute. The character is pathetic but perhaps its a setup for a redemption arc.

by Anonymousreply 37August 30, 2022 11:55 PM

I love this show! I'll watch anything Garret Dillahunt is in - he's so good. Such a talented comedic actor, and a total hunk.

He did an extended bit trying to look into a garbage can while wearing a dog cone collar that had me rolling on the floor. Just brilliant.

by Anonymousreply 38August 31, 2022 1:16 AM

Just found this series and love it. Started a separate link and have been shamed by DL.

R41 Because you’re one of the nepotism crazies?

by Anonymousreply 42September 6, 2022 1:12 PM

R39, you must watch the scene where Martha tells River that she 'thinks about him when she goes to the bathroom' 10X, and say a Hail, Holy Queen.

I like the Greg Garcia universe. I enjoyed The Guest Book which was short lived. Thanks OP.

by Anonymousreply 44September 6, 2022 3:09 PM

Okay, it's adorable, thanks again OP. Greg Dillahunt is my ideal man.

by Anonymousreply 45September 6, 2022 5:32 PM

[quote]I like the Greg Garcia universe. I enjoyed The Guest Book which was short lived. Thanks OP.

R44 I agree. The Stockard Channing episode was one of the best on The Guest Book. Garcia had a good run with My Name is Earl which had a great ensemble cast and was very underrated.

by Anonymousreply 48September 8, 2022 8:06 AM

All episodes are out now, in the end it’s not a bad little first season for a series, but I think they dumped the rest of the episodes because they weren’t getting the following they hoped for or watching went down because people forgot about it by a week later. It’s much more of a binge in one weekend than follow weekly show.

The creator does a phenomenal job of introducing characters and building them into the narrative and having them actual all do something and become important to the story. It’s very intricately thought out and acts as a well oiled machine with lots of call backs. There was the introduction of a Gay male couple in the final third who were nicely bitchy, but not over the top. Everybody in the cast gets to shine, and they all act stupid at sone point, but nothing completely mean spirited or overly vulgar. The ensemble really grew in strength into their parts by the end, and you get the sense they started to really have fun together as a cast.

by Anonymousreply 49September 19, 2022 12:18 AM

Did it end with 9 episodes? That's all I have access to. I enjoyed it. A great little caper. Oh and I'm going to find my favorite standalone episode of The Guest Book. Heavy on the gay content.

by Anonymousreply 50September 19, 2022 12:27 AM

Is there any chance that Garret Dillahunt takes it in the ass?

by Anonymousreply 51September 19, 2022 12:35 AM

I’m pro-choice but Martha has had too many abortions for me to be comfortable watching her onscreen. After 5, the madness becomes the method, I’m afraid.

by Anonymousreply 52September 19, 2022 12:44 AM

Funniest thing about this show is Martha Plimptons ode to ‘Strangers with Candy’ and the 70s gem of a car … the PACER! Otherwise it’s bad , predictable and ‘jokes’ are stale.

by Anonymousreply 53September 19, 2022 12:57 AM

Yes, episode 9 was the season finale. Also, for those interested, it was filmed regionally in Pittsburgh, but portraying Maryland. Hope they give it a few months to build interest and watching before they make renew/cancel decisions.

by Anonymousreply 54September 19, 2022 1:03 AM

Didn't The Guest Book evolve into The Beach House for it's second season? I remember seeing an episode or two and then - poof - it was gone.

by Anonymousreply 55September 19, 2022 2:26 AM

They moved locations but kept the hilarious stripper and crabman.

by Anonymousreply 56September 19, 2022 3:58 AM

R56 Yes! Thank you. I thought I might have imagined it.

by Anonymousreply 57September 19, 2022 5:52 AM

Like the other Garcia shows, I really liked this one. With most series these days, they shot the season finale as a potential series finale. This one seems like a very strong finale. Not sure if they're even planning another round with this one.

by Anonymousreply 58September 19, 2022 1:38 PM

I really enjoyed it. Got a little "samey" in the middle, but the resolution was nice. Love Martha, adore the actress who plays Wiggles- what a find!

I was not surprised to find out it was by the My Name is Earl guy, as it resembled that quite a bit in tone and characters.

by Anonymousreply 59September 19, 2022 1:42 PM

Just like on Raising Hope, expect for some minor character brillance, most of the other series leads here suffer in comparison to the consistent marvelous performances by Garrett and Martha

by Anonymousreply 60September 19, 2022 10:27 PM

Why do Marta Plipton has that face all of the time? Well?

by Anonymousreply 61September 19, 2022 10:33 PM

🎶…she’s always a Goonie to me.

by Anonymousreply 62September 19, 2022 10:52 PM

Is Marta her evil German Doppelgänger?

by Anonymousreply 64September 19, 2022 11:43 PM

I did not recognize Susan Ruttan of LA Law playing Garret’s mom until that final episode. And it wasn’t until the credits that I noticed it was Love Boat’s Fred Grandy playing the old husband of Kate Walsh’s character.

This felt like a series finale, which wouldn’t be a bad thing. If so, I hope Garret and Martha team up for something else one day!

by Anonymousreply 66September 20, 2022 1:40 AM

I love Garret and Martha, but Garret’s trying to pass for 47 in this show? He looks great, but that old man neck gives him away.

by Anonymousreply 67September 20, 2022 1:45 AM

I have a crush on Phillip Garcia, who plays the son.

R61 I think Martha is channeling Eve Arden on this show, both her looks and delivery.

by Anonymousreply 70September 20, 2022 7:47 AM

[quote]I have a crush on Phillip Garcia, who plays the son.

He reminds me of Crabman on Earl; the same sweet character.

by Anonymousreply 71September 20, 2022 7:49 AM

I loved the series. I knew Raising Hope, but none of the other Greg Garcia shows. Wiggles is a great comedic actress. Martha was the highlight of The Good Wife for me, and loved her in Parenthood.

The neighbor looked familiar, but what has he been in? And I didn’t even realize the senator was Kate Walsh until the very end.

by Anonymousreply 72September 20, 2022 8:40 AM

She's a Carradine. No wonder she's nuts.

by Anonymousreply 73September 20, 2022 10:27 AM

The neighbor (Chris Bauer) was in True Blood and Third Watch.

The gay assistant of the congresswoman was the son of the show’s creator, Greg Garcia. I think he’s been in all of his previous shows.

by Anonymousreply 74September 20, 2022 2:28 PM

Martha was born looking OLD and she was never attractive

AWWW

by Anonymousreply 75September 20, 2022 2:45 PM

by Anonymousreply 76September 20, 2022 5:20 PM

I loved Rooster. R16 is insane.

by Anonymousreply 77September 20, 2022 7:06 PM

The neighbor was also the dad on the docks season of The Wire

by Anonymousreply 78September 20, 2022 7:09 PM

Rooster makes me moist - down there!

by Anonymousreply 79September 20, 2022 7:55 PM

R73 Martha is a Carradine? Did not know this...

by Anonymousreply 80September 21, 2022 3:08 AM

I remember when Martha Plimpton was in ER and she was so acclaimed and I was inclined to agree because she had her character down so well that I could tell the dredge hag she was playing smelled like stale cigarettes and vodka. Like you could literally smell her.

by Anonymousreply 81September 21, 2022 3:31 AM

I need to know more about Martha. Does she deserve her own thread?

by Anonymousreply 82September 21, 2022 3:38 AM

Martha Plimpton deserves to be discussed in every thread

by Anonymousreply 83September 21, 2022 12:28 PM

Martha still has a great figure.

by Anonymousreply 85September 21, 2022 11:47 PM

I love her hairstyle with that white streak in the front, also her Eve Arden smirk. Good show, I hope it makes it to a second season.

by Anonymousreply 86September 22, 2022 12:26 AM

Love Martha, she’s been good in so much I’m so glad she’s become more of a name in recent years I thought she would fade out after the 90s like her other 80s/90s contemporaries.

by Anonymousreply 87September 22, 2022 5:14 AM

I'm liking it so far. And the commercials on Freevee are at least tolerable instead of randomly stuck in like they are on Pluto and Tubi.

by Anonymousreply 88September 23, 2022 5:01 AM

Martha is going to have so many roles suddenly available to her the older she gets. It's like she was born to play a crotchety, alarmingly plain-speaking old lady. She's the Marjorie Main of the 21st century, which is why I love her.

by Anonymousreply 89September 23, 2022 5:07 AM

R89 I think she's more Eve Arden than Marjorie Main. I love Marjorie Main but Martha still has her figure.

by Anonymousreply 90September 23, 2022 5:10 AM

I really love her too. I'm concerned that her voice did a new little squeaky thing at times. It was on purpose, but I love her so much I feel like she should go get checked by a doctor.

by Anonymousreply 91September 23, 2022 5:44 AM

Loved it, but I think Sprung sprang. Nine glorious episodes, where would they go from here?

by Anonymousreply 92September 24, 2022 1:58 AM

It’s a new network that needs to have some solid hits and build a following, so I think if the numbers are well enough there is a strong chance it could get a season two. Remember when FOX first launched in the early years, they renewed shows just to have programming going on. I just don’t know what word of mouth exists for this show in the larger world outside this thread. Also, there’s a chance another streaming platform might see it and think it’s a good starter series and pick it up and blow it up like HBO Max did with The Other Two and Search Party. Two of my favorites of the last few years.

by Anonymousreply 93September 24, 2022 2:47 AM

Love shows that come from a singular viewpoint like this. Amazon definitely let Greg do a show that was 100% in the Greg Garcia universe.

Not sure what the future will be, but loved what they were able to create here. This show will certainly attract Greg Garcia show fans, but I'm not sure if there is much more of an audience that you can expand upon.

by Anonymousreply 94September 24, 2022 3:17 AM

R94 Amazon? I thought it was Freevee. Whichever channel allows Garcia to continue his unique take on life, I'm all for it and will subscribe.

by Anonymousreply 95September 24, 2022 4:19 AM

Freevee is an Amazon channel. Given the name, they'll likely try to roll it out further as a low cost streaming channel. Hopefully with some great original programming like this

by Anonymousreply 96September 24, 2022 1:20 PM

You cut the "C" off! Now it's a recipe for "asserole."
