He started his ice hockey career, playing for USA Bobcats where he won the title of MVP just at the age of 14. He later joined  AAA hockey club in Detroit where he played for three years for which he lived with the Retired NHL Player  Pat Verbeek in Michigan. In the  2004 Ontario Hockey League Midget Draft, he was selected by the junior team of London Knights in the 5th round.

Chicago Blackhawks

In 2007, he signed with the Chicago Blackhawks as their right-winger. On June 25, 2007, he played his first game at Wrigley Field. In October 2007, he made his first NGL debut against Minnesota Wild. Weeks passed and he scored his first NHL regulation time goal against Colorado Avalanche.

When he ended his first NHL season he was the top rookie with 72 points. He beat Nicklas Backstrom and Jonathan Toews and he was honored with Calder Memorial Trophy. In May 2009, he performed his first hat trick in the plays offs against the Vancouver Canucks.

On December 3, 2009, he extended his contract to five years for $31.5 million. Later in 2013 playoffs, he got his second career hat-trick against Los Angeles Kings.

He was named as the first winger and the number one overall draft pick to win the Conn Smythe Trophy. He injured his left leg in the game against St. Louis Blues through Brenden Morrow and this made him miss the remaining of the regular season. He later returned for post-season made team highest 20 points from 19 games with eight goals and 12 assists. In the 2016 NHL All-Star Game, he was named the captain.

He made his 40-goal mark in his NHL career after scoring the last goal against Winnipeg Jets. On January 9, 2018, he made his first five-point game against Ottawa Senators and was drafted to play in the 2018 NHL All-Star Game.

In 2016, he was honored with Hart Memorial Trophy and the  Art Ross Trophy and he became the first NHL player to get the awards. He collected his 800th NHL career point against New York Islanders at United Center, Chicago, becoming the fifth player in franchise history to reach that level on January 21, 2018.

International Career

In the 2006 IIHF, he represented his national team in the U-18 Championship. Here, he emerged as the highest scorer with 12 points. He led the U.S team for Gold Medal in the IIHF World U-18 Championship All-Star team in 2006 and earned himself All-Star team honors where he made an average of two points per game.

In 2008, he competed in the World Championship along with the U.S team. Later in 2010, he played the Olympic Games in Vancouver, where he scored 3 goals and 2 assists from 6 games. He also was in the team that won the Silver medal in the tournament. In 2014 Olympic Games, he represented his national side team in Sochi where he missed penalty shots over Finland and won a bronze medal.
