Gittel was Nef’s breakout role in the Amazon Original Series Transparent, for which she received a SAG Award nomination in 2016. The first openly transgender woman to be signed to IMG Models, she made her catwalk debut at New York Fashion Week Spring 2015 while walking for both Hood By Air and Eckhaus Latta.

She made history by becoming the first openly transgender lady to grace the cover of a significant British publication. Nef has written on a wide range of subjects, including sex, gender, and transgender identity as well as great art and film. She is a New York City resident and employee.

In the 2015 Emmy-winning television series Transparent, Nef played the role of Tante Gittel. Gittel’s persona is based on a Pfefferman family relative who resided in Berlin, Germany, during the Weimar Republic as a cross-dresser before being killed in the Holocaust.
