Chance gave many of his initial performances at the Harold Washington Library’s YOUmedia Lyricist Loft in Chicago.

Bennett first met Richard M. Daley, the former mayor of Chicago, when he finished second in a local songwriting competition. Daley liked Bennett’s songs.

Bennett wrote the first draft of his debut album, 10 Day, throughout most of his junior year and a tiny portion of his senior year. The album was later published following Bennett’s ten-day suspension for marijuana use.

Living in his hometown of Chicago, Bennett. James Blake and he once resided together in a North Hollywood home. Bennett referred to his experience in North Hollywood as “ungodly” while describing it.
